Activity participant information

  • If you wish to participate in a club activity without joining for the year, you can do so by signing a $5 insurance "waiver" each time.
  • The Vernon Outdoors Club has an expectation that it is the responsibility of each individual to keep up with the average participant on any given activity. It is the exclusive right of VOC Leaders to refuse to allow anybody in their activity if, in his or her opinion, the participant is inadequately equipped or physically unfit.
  • All smokers MUST REFRAIN from lighting up until they are safely back in a community which boasts a fire department! This is a liability issue for the club in that a participant on one of our scheduled events could cause a cost we may be liable for in putting out any potential fire caused by a cigarette. If you cannot refrain from smoking for this period of time, we request that you do not attend these scheduled events.
  • Bring everything you need to make your outdoor experience as enjoyable and safe as possible! This may include hiking poles, extra snacks and water, spare bicycle tube and pump, GPS, compass, map, binoculars, camera & film. It MUST include good ("broken in") above-the-ankle hiking boots for hikes and rambles, bicycle (appropriate for the terrain) in well-maintained condition and a bicycle helmet for cycling activities, plenty of water or other liquid (it is too easy to be badly dehydrated in the North Okanagan at the elevations we "play" at), your own lunch and sufficient clothing for mountain weather conditions (including everything from sun to snow). It might also include a whistle, sunscreen, insect repellent, your own small First Aid kit.
  • At the meeting place ensure you sign the sign-in sheet(a Club and Landowner liability waiver).
  • The TRIP LEADER will ask if anybody needs a ride to Trailhead and will help set that up; the Trip Leader will mention the suggested carpool gratuity (posted on individual schedule sheets) and which everybody is encouraged to pay; but, to avoid your driver being classed as a cab driver (for insurance and legal purposes), it is not paid until the activity is completed!
  • All Participants MUST remain behind the LEADER and in front of the SWEEP, the TRIP LEADER will point out to the group who that is.
  • Choose someone to tell for those times when leaving the trail for a "nature call".
  • If for any reason you do get separated from the group, stay put; an individual is much easier to find if he or she refrains from wandering off.
  • The activity will take place at the pace of the average participant.
