President's Message

What is the saying"Time flies when your having fun" - well I must be having fun as the year seems to have whizzed by. Here we are the banquet is over and we don't even have to wait for the snow to fall on the "hill", as a number of you have already tested the new snow up there.

As time does not stand still, the co-ordinators are already busy working on next years schedules and are in need of leaders to step forward. I know some of you have aleady put your name forward, which is greatly appreciated, but many more are needed .So, if you are able to lead a hike /cycle ride or just as important if you would like to be a co-leader to learn a route, please let Colin, Brandt or Donna know . As well please do not wait since, as mentioned, they are already working on the 2006 schedules and would like to finalize leaders now.

2006 promises to bring you the same fun activities so it is important that you stay in touch, watch the web site and hang on to your trekker so you don't miss out. One important change this year is the Cycle week, so be sure to read all about it in this trekker and pay particular attention to the dates and booking times.

Finally, thank you everyone for making this such a successful year and I look forward to seeing a number of you on the slopes or snowshoe trails this winter.

RAMBLER TALK

Our Rambles finished November 1; a very wet Tuesday when 17 hearty souls donned their raingear and explored some new trails in the Thomas Hayes Ecological Reserve near Armstrong.

This year we experience more rainy Tuesdays than usual. None of our hikes were cancelled but a few destinations had to be changed at the last moment. Despite the weather, a total of 1139 hikers trekked with the Ramblers this season compared with 1238 in 2004.

Thank you to the club members that have volunteered many hours to trail clear, scout, lead and sweep. Your willingness to help is what keeps our club out on the trails.

Have a great winter whether you are up skiing on Silver Star or heading south for some fun in the sun and I will see you back on the trails in the spring.

Donna
SUNDAY HIKES

24 of us ended another successful year with a hike in Kal Park the day after the wind-up banquet. Now I have to get cracking on the 2006 schedule! Again, I and the rest of the members want to thank the leaders who make these hikes possible. A few of our past leaders will not be available in 2006, so I am still looking for volunteers.

See you on the ski trails!
Colin

VOC Clothing and Badges

Timing of the sale of Vernon Outdoors Club clothing and badges is about to change. This will mean they will now be available for purchase/order only twice a year -- at the Spring Annual General Meeting and again at the Fall General Meeting. During those meetings a table will be set up where orders can be placed for t-shirts, vests and name badges. Excess inventory will also be for sale at those times. This change is taking place in an effort to better coordinate sales and volume orders rather than handling them sporadically throughout the year.

So, please take note of this change and be prepared to order your VOC clothing and badges at the next AGM!

Also, currently there is a VOC vest, navy, size medium (but fits large), for sale due to a sizing error in ordering. If you are interested in purchasing this vest, please contact Joan Swirp 260-5777
Cariboo Gambler Bike Campout

Yes we are definitely heading to the South Cariboo next Sept. 5-10,2006! The theme is Western, and events are related to cards!!!

We will be touring around 108 Mile Rancch, 100 Mile House, Green Lake, Lone Butte, and Painted Chasm Prov. Park.

There are 5 paved,2 gravel, and 2 "dirt" routes. Four of these routes are directly out of Base Camp with distances ranging from 40 to 74 Km. Some routes have hills and potholes (Cariboo Style) but most are not extremely difficult. Most are out-and-back rides to avoid the busy highways. There is no early bird ride so no need to drive the 300Km on the long weekend. There MAY be an extra ride on Monday.

Your hosts are Christine and Cliff Whitehead at Ace High Resort on Watch Lake. Reservations can be made starting on Jan. 1/2006 (Not before) by contacting them at:

    Phone/fax (250) 456-7518
    E-Mail: acehigh@bcinternet.net
    Their web site is: www.acehighresort.com

If the cabins are shared with 4 persons per cabin, we can all stay at Ace High and participate in the extra-curricular activities.(This is our priority) There is lots of room between and behind the cabins for the RV's and tents. When you make your reservations be sure to also make reservations for the Barbecue/Dance on Saturday night Sept. 9th if you would like to attend. The cost is $20./head and western attire is encouraged.

Other activities include the "jokers wild" happy appie hour, the Barbecue lunch at 108, the traditional garbage bag salad, the Cariboo Country Nights Barbecue and Dance, the Pancake Breakfast, and hiking, swimming, "free" canoeing, fishing, kayaking, craft tours and Submarine Races( a popular visual event)

Can anyone bring BOCCE BALLS?

Be prepared to bring something for both the Garbage Bag Salad and the Fruit Cocktail Salad. Barb Logan will organize the BAG, and Sharon Reid will organize the Fruit Salad.

Suzie's Notes - New Edition of Guide

The "6th Edition" Committee of the Club's Hiking Trails book met recently and all of us are working on revisions. Revisions include any necessary changes to "hike" text - descriptions of access to trailhead, as well as the hike itself. We are eliminating some hikes and adding an equal number of new ones.

If ANYBODY OUT THERE is aware of any errors or omissions in the current (5th) edition, now is the time to speak up .... PLEASE !!!

Also, we need digital photos of the following hikes: Blackwell Lake, Blue Grouse Mountain (off Westside Road), Cougar Canyon, Hayman Lake (above Westbank), High Rim Trail (Goudie Road to Philpot Road section), Little White, Mara Mountain (Kamloops), Nelson Mountain, Ravine Edge

We expect to go to print sometime in the spring of 2006 so, please, let me have your input. Don't forget, it's YOUR book, not just the Committee's; it is sold primarily to "Joe Public" and therefore reflects on the Club's overall "professionalism".

Fast forward to your 2006 Membership Form; if you give us your e-mail address, you will be sent occasional "e-bulletins" about Club activities (changes to schedules, additional "fun" things like the Golf and Curling tournies); it's a great way of keeping in touch and not feeling left out!

Cheers everyone - Suzie 250-546-8185
