President's Message

Another year has gone and by all the reports, the year has been very good and enjoyed by all. Over all attendance for hikes and cycling has been good. The success of the activities of the Vernon Outdoors Club is due to the hard work of all the hiking and cycling leaders, the executive and the volunteers for clearing the trails. Thank you to all those volunteers. It is a job well done. It is this cooperation in the club that makes the Vernon Outdoors Club such a success.

Skiing and snowshoeing is a little later this year so check with appropriate people for more information. Colin Baxter will have the information posted on the website for the Peter Legg Memorial Hike at Illecillewaet and George Ferguson has the September cycling week organized and will have that information for you as well.

The winning photos in the Photo Contest at the annual Banquet will be put on the Club Website, so check there if interested. The winners receive a one year membership to the VOC. The winners are: Colin Baxter for Scenic, Oleh Maryniak for People and Collette Silva for miscellaneous.

The leaders are getting schedules ready for the new season in 2009 and this will be posted on the website in the near future. Do your part as well and note that for all hikes, over the ankle boots are a must. Be prepared for the spring.

All of you people that won the door prizes at the Annual banquet, please make an effort to thank the business that donated your prize.

Dates to remember:
-Annual General Meeting _ March 11, 2009, 7:00 PM at the Schubert Center
-Fall General Meeting _ September 23, 2009, 7:00 PM at the Schubert Center
-Annual Banquet _ October 24, 2009 at the Schubert Center

To all of you, have a happy holiday and good skiing and snowshoeing.

Sunday Hikes
I would like to thank all those who led hikes in 2008 and helped to make it another successful season. Thanks also to those who have agreed to lead hikes in 2009, some for the first time. I will be making up the 2009 schedule soon, so don't be surprised if you get a phone call from me if I haven't spoken to you already. Meanwhile, see you skiing or snowshoeing!

Important Notice
The Vernon Outdoors Club has an expectation that each individual is able to keep up with the average participant on any given activity. It is the exclusive right of VOC Leaders to refuse to allow anybody in their activity if, in his or her opinion, the participant is, (for example), inadequately equipped or physically unfit.

HIKERS AND RAMBLERS PLEASE NOTE
Above-the-ankle hiking boots are required for all hikes. Leaders may decline to allow anyone without proper footwear to participate.
Peter Legg Memorial Hike 2009
*Please note the change to Tuesday and Wednesday.*

The 2009 campout will take place on Tuesday, July 28th. and Wednesday, July 29th. at lllecillewaet Campground in Glacier National Park. (66km/ 50mins east of Revelstoke on the right-hand side before you get to Rogers Pass summit.) No reservations are available or required. Colin Baxter, (250-558-3356), will be the hike coordinator.

Tuesday, July 28th. 1PM - Great Glacier trail - One way distance 3km, elevation gain 300m, with good views of Mt. Sir Donald and other peaks.

Wednesday, July 29th. 9AM - Avalanche Crest trail, (last hiked by the Club in 2003.) One-way distance 4.2km, elevation gain 795m. A strenuous hike with spectacular views of many peaks and glaciers from the summit. For those wishing to do a shorter hike, go to the 3rd. bridge on the Asulkan trail, (approx 2hrs. one-way), or hike to Marion Lake, (on the Abbott Ridge trail), 2.2km/1.5hrs. uphill one-way, with a 425m elevation gain.

Meeting place for both hikes: Follow the hiker signs at the end of the paved campground entrance road up a short gravel road to the old railway right-of-way. (Pass the ACC's Wheeler Hut set back on your left at the top of the gravel road.)
Ramblers
Our Rambles finished October 28; a beautiful fall day when 34 hikers enjoyed a wiener roast up in Glenmore Heights. Thanks to Geoff, Wally and crew for organizing it for us.

Our season opened on March 25, we completed 25 hikes and a total of 890 hikers trekked the hills and valleys with us this year.

Thank you to the club members that have volunteered many hours to trail clear scout, lead and sweep. Your willingness to help is what keeps our club out on the trails.

I am always looking for leaders and suggestions for hikes so if you can help give me a call.

Have a great winter whether you are up skiing the slopes or heading south for some fun in the sun and I will see you back on the trails in the spring.

2009 CYCLE CAMP

Plan on coming to Radium Hot Springs Sept. 14-18th 2009.In addition to cycling there is plenty of hiking, golfing, sight seeing and soaking in the hot pool, and contrary to popular belief there will not be lots of hills to climb.

Camping will be at the Canyon RV Resort (250)347-9564 (www.CanyonRV.com) but reservations cannot be made until March 1,2009.
Some of us will be staying at the Sable Ridge Resort and I am investigating the possibility of holding the garbage bag salad night and pancake breakfast at the club house there. If interested you can call High Country Properties Vacation Rentals @-800-665-1801 or view @ www.highcountryproperties.com (choose Radium Hot Springs then look for Sable Ridge). Otherwise there are lots of choices in Radium for accommodation.
There is a 400-600 car- Classic Car rally on the week-end of Sept. 19-20th so if interested in taking this in make sure to book early and cover the week-end.

Full details of all rides will be provided in the Feb 2009 trekker.
